Surgical scars from mastectomy or breast reconstruction can create havoc, causing any or all of the problems listed above. The effects of radiation therapy are often confined to the area being treated, causing fibrosis. Fibrosis is a thickening and scarring of connective tissue in and around the irradiated area and can cause a binding down of the deeper structures. Breast tissue may become swollen due to fluid build-up and much firmer because of the development of this fibrous tissue. Sensation changes are commonly seen following cancer treatment. The skin may become more sensitive or less sensitive and feel thicker and firmer than it was before radiation.
A few benefits of Myofascial Release include: relief of pain and stiffness, increased mobility, restored function, increased energy, improved sleep and an enhanced quality of life. These benefits of relief are essential as many women receiving the diagnosis of breast cancer experience initial feelings of shock, disbelief, and distress, but often return to good psychological health.  For other women, the diagnosis of breast cancer leaves lingering psychological problems. Myofascial Release offers a healthy and wholistic approach to improve the psychological issues that arise following diagnosis and treatment. As myofascial release frees the adhered tissue, the trapped emotions and painful memories fade away leaving the person with a sense of peace. This return to balance is sort of like letting the steam out of a pressure cooker.

Wellness After Breast Cancer:
Easing Pain and Dysfunction Through Myofascial Release
By Susan Jenkins, PT
Myofascial Release is a profound but gentle form of manual therapy that is very effective for the treatment of chronic pain and dysfunction. In support of breast cancer awareness month, the focus of this article will be directed toward the benefit of myofascial release relieving pain and dysfunction that can follow breast cancer surgery and/or cancer treatment. Myofascial Release has benefitted many women who struggle with problems following breast cancer treatment, including scar tissue from surgery, fibrosis resulting from radiation therapy, chest wall and shoulder pain, limited shoulder mobility or frozen shoulder, and lymphedema. Back pain may indirectly result as well from tightness that develops in the chest area. These problems can in many cases be substantially alleviated or eliminated by Myofascial Release.
Understanding the theory of myofascial release and how myofascial release can be beneficial for the body requires a basic understanding of the fascial system. (For complete story go to integrative Physical Therapy’s website at www.iptwellness.com).
