Susan G. Komen Memphis-MidSouth Race for the Cure®
OCTOBER IS NATIONAL BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

Did you know that more than 100 lives are claimed by breast cancer each day in the United States? Did you know that a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every three minutes? Did you know that approximately 20 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during your lunch hour today? Did you know that this year in the United States, about 10,000 women under 40 will be told they have breast cancer? Or that one woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every three minutes, and one woman will die of breast cancer every 13 minutes in the United States?
Did you realize one of them could be your grandmother, mother, aunt, daughter, sister or a friend! That is why it takes all of us to join in the Susan G. Komen Memphis-MidSouth Race for the Cure® to raise much needed funds for education and research. At Komen we are keeping our promise that the Race is not over, the Race is not won, until we’ve found a cure for breast cancer. So please support the women and men in you life by joining us. All it takes is at least a mile and a few dollars.
In 1983, Nancy Brinker created the first Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® in Dallas, Texas with 800 participants. Today, the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® series is the largest series of 5K runs/fitness walks in the world. To date there are more than 100 Races with over 1 million people anticipated to participate in 2008.
Currently, a significant number of people who participate in the Komen Race for the Cure® do so because of a personal connection with the disease – either through their own diagnosis or in support or honor of a friend or a loved one. It is a powerful and emotional sight to see so many people assembled to show their love and support for others who have been toughed by breast cancer.
In addition to raising funds, the Race series is committed to educating the public about early detection, the strongest method of surviving this life-threatening disease. The five-year survival rate for women with localized breast cancer (cancer that has not spread to lymph nodes or other locations outside the breast) has increased from 80 percent in the 1950s to over 95 percent (98 percent) in 2007.
Empowering Race participants with the lifesaving and early detection knowledge that they need to take care of themselves is a priority at Komen for the Cure and the Race site provides a tremendous opportunity to reach this important and captive audience. Our goal is to raise awareness of the importance of a positive breast health program – annual mammography beginning at age 40, clinical breast exams at least every three years beginning at age 20 and annually at age 40, and monthly breast self-examinations for all women beginning by age 20.
I AM THE CURE®
Komen for the Cure has developed a compelling educational initiative called I AM THE CURE.® This program will enable Komen Affiliates to boost the educational outreach of their Race program, motivating women and men to take an active role in their own breast health.
I AM THE CURE® is a rallying cry that is emotional, memorable and motivational. It speaks to the importance of early detection, understanding that early detection is the best defense, and provides simple, action-oriented messages the Race participants can take home and put into action.
Additionally, by enhancing the Race series with I AM THE CURE®, we are further substantiating the mission component of the Race series, thereby allowing further dollars to be allocated to the mission versus general and administrative and fundraising, thus lowering the expense ratio.
The feedback from participating Affiliates as well as Race participants confirmed the educational value and need for the I AM THE CURE® program. More than 85% of Race participants we spoke with remembered the educational breast health messages. Additionally Affiliates confirmed that the program enhanced the educational mission of their Races and got participants engaged and excited.
Key Program Components
The goal of the I AM THE CURE® initiative is to educate everyone touched by the Race series about the importance of a positive breast health program and to empower people to take charge of their own breast health. This is done by messaging – incorporated into all key communications including registration brochures, PSA’s, t-shirts, etc., or through the Cure Leader program getting young people involved on Race day. These Race day recruits are provided official roles as the “Cheerleaders” of the Race. These Cheerleaders will rally the crowds on the sidelines calling out key messages about early detection. Also onsite will be an I AM THE CURE booth with a spinning wheel where if you answer 3 or 4 questions, you will win a prize. The program also includes many other components offered year round to support the programs development.
ABOUT THE ZETA’S
In 1992 Zeta Tau Alpha (ZTA) joined the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in the fight against breast cancer and has continued to promote breast cancer education and awareness locally and nationally. Through the National Series Breast Cancer Survivor Recognition Program, breast cancer survivors receive pink caps and T-shirts to wear during Komen Race for the Cure events. All race participants receive “In Celebration Of” and In Memory Of” back signs to honor loved ones, and breast self-exam calendar reminder stickers. Every year, more than 5,000 ZTA volunteers donate in excess of 50,000 hours to more than 100 Races nationwide, and thousands of members participate in Races.

Meet Billie White, 2008 Race Co-Chair

This is my second year to be involved with Race for the Cure. Last year, several of my co-workers were on the Race committee and asked if I wanted to help. Because a friend of mine had just been diagnosed with breast cancer, I thought it would be a good way to not only show my support for her but also help all women out there. In 2007, I was mainly involved with promoting Teams and helping with any questions/issues they had in the registration process.
When my friend was diagnosed at the age of 29, I came to the realization that breast cancer not only affects older women but women of all ages. As I am only 31 years old, I realized that I needed to start helping find the Cure, NOW. Although I am not a Survivor myself, I do have a passion for finding a cure as my friend passed away this year. Even before she passed away, I decided to make an even bigger commitment and step into the role of Race Chair. I can only hope that the Race will continue to raise awareness and that through the money we raise we can increase our number of Survivors each year.

About Susan G. Komen for the Cure
Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure and launched the global breast cancer movement. Today, Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Thanks to events like the Komen Race for the Cure, we have invested nearly $1 billion to fulfill our promise, becoming the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.
