Kroger and Yoplait® Partners in the Fight Against Breast Cancer

Kroger and Yoplait are teaming up again for an in-store fundraising effort to support Susan G. Komen for the Cure® and their promise to end breast cancer forever. The program is integrated with the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure events in Little Rock, AR on October 11, 2008 and in Memphis, TN on October 25, 2008. Since 2000, Yoplait has worked with Kroger to support Komen for the Cure® in their mission to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease. Through this partnership, Kroger and Yoplait have donated over $887,900 to local Komen Affiliates and we will have surpassed $1million in donations in June 2009.
From October 8 through October 14 and again October 22 through 28, 2008, Yoplait, the National Series Presenting Sponsor of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® Series, and Kroger, a local sponsor, will donate $2 for every 20 Yoplait® yogurt cups sold to consumers in area Kroger stores, up to $10,000.
New treatments and evolving therapies, combined with regular screenings and healthier lifestyle choices, are proving to be powerful weapons in the fight against breast cancer. Thanks to Komen and the support of sponsors, most women diagnosed with breast cancer can be treated effectively if it’s caught in time.
More than one million women worldwide are diagnosed with breast cancer each year and in the U.S., one in eight women risk developing breast cancer in her lifetime.
The best defense against breast cancer is a solid offense — spearheaded chiefly by regular screenings and breast self-awareness. Contributions from sponsors, like Yoplait and Kroger, have helped Komen for the Cure provide local breast cancer screening, education and outreach programs. Up to 75 percent of net proceeds from each local Komen Race for the Cure event stays in the community to fund breast health education and breast cancer programs.

Help and Hope for Breast Cancer Patients

FormFitting is helping breast cancer patients receive post-mastectomy care items such as breast prostheses and bras at no charge. But more women would be able to take advantage of this opportunity if they only knew about it.
The program assists patients who are in financial need with co-pays and deductibles. In a small percentage where there may be no coverage by Medicare, Tenn Care, Medicaid or a Third Party Payor, the entire amount is paid.
Experts feel that the rate of recovery and quality of life for patients could be impacted by their sense of self. FormFitting reshapes and balances bodies helping to maintain a positive self-image. Providing items that fit their forms without revealing their loss.
Wings Cancer Foundation, a non-profit organization with locations Tennessee and Mississippi, provides hope, education, research and support without charge to anyone touched by cancer regardless of where treatment is received. For more information about FormFitting, contact the Wings Cancer Foundation at 901.322.2984. For a complete listing of services, visit www.wingscancerfoundation.org.

Breast Cancer: The Pain Behind the Pain

Most women thought that they would never be the ones to tell a cancer survival story and some on the other hand never believed that they would even be alive to talk about it.
Over 200,000 women in the U.S alone and over 20,000 in Canada, have the terrible news of hearing that they have breast cancer. And many of these women don’t only go through the physical torture of this diffusive disease—along comes the fatigue of being in an emotional turmoil of living in a body that may be dying.
Your husband, your children, your parents; sisters; brothers, will most likely be going through this chaotic time with you—some more than others. From constant hospital visits to therapy rooms to being in bed for the longest hours of your life, not being able to do the things that you did so easily and impressively and largely not being able to be there for the people you love and care about.
Battles have been won and some lost for those who have and are still experiencing these cancer wars, whether it is directly or indirectly. Many still have hope of finding solutions.
Bizymoms.com has helped many women with whatever information it is they may be seeking, and a panel of cancer experts; women, wives, mothers; are waiting to share their expertise and stories while learning about yours.

New Project Captures Underrepresented Voices of Young Breast Cancer Patients

There are more than 250,000 women under the age of forty that are living with breast cancer and 11,000 will be diagnosed in the next year.
Television-star Christina Applegate’s tumor was detected through magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which was ordered by her doctor, according to her publicist. That decision proved lifesaving because the cancer was caught early—when it is most likely to be treated and cured.
While the highly sensitive MRI is excellent at detecting tumors in young women whose dense breast tissue often hides tumors on mammogram X-rays, it is also a very expensive procedure, and one that frequently detects false abnormalities that necessitate biopsies. For this reason, the test is recommended only for those at increased risk of breast cancer. Incidents of breast cancer is very uncommon in those under fifty, so most doctors do not screen women in their thirties. Applegate’s mother had previously battled breast cancer, but that by itself is not usually enough to justify an MRI in a woman so young. Since her announcement, Applegate has since undergone a double mastectomy.
Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey reintroduced the Annie Fox Act in 2007, which would provide $9 million annually to fund more breast cancer research in women under age 40. Zero Breast Cancer, a patient advocacy organization in the San Francisco Bay Area, is leading the effort to get this legislation passed.
The BioWindows online survey addresses not only family histories, but also medical and lifestyle factors that are possible causative agents. By building a personal medical and lifestyle family tree, women of all ages diagnosed with breast cancer will have valuable information at their fingertips to help their physicians make more personalized treatment decisions.

ACS Still Accepting Donations

The American Cancer Society® announced that over $141,000 was raised at its local Making Strides Against Breast Cancer® event on October 11. Over 4,000 dedicated area residents participated in this inspirational walk around Cancer Survivors Park to honor and celebrate breast cancer survivors.
Donations to fight breast cancer are still being accepted by calling the American Cancer Society at 901-278-2091 or online at www.cancer.org/stridesonline.
The American Cancer Society uses the money raised at the Greater Memphis Making Strides event to fund lifesaving breast cancer research; provide up-to-date breast cancer information; ensure all women have access to breast cancer screening and treatments, regardless of income; and provide services that improve the quality of life for patients and their families.
"Almost everyone has been touched by breast cancer in some way," said Greg Broy, local spokesperson for the American Cancer Society. “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer truly demonstrates that hope starts with each and every one of us. This event gives us both the chance to celebrate those who’ve survived breast cancer, and the opportunity to help guarantee that future generations are not faced with this life-threatening disease.”
Sponsors of this year’s walk included Fred's Discount Stores, Saint Francis Hospital, Kim-FM, Soul Classics 103.5, and Fox 13.
The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy and service. Call 24 hours a day to 1-800-ACS-2345 or visit cancer.org.

American Breast Cancer Foundation Provides Financial Assistance for Women in Need of Screening and Diagnostic Services

The American Breast Cancer Foundation reminds women of any age that financial assistance is available nationwide. Founded in 1997, the American Breast Cancer Foundation (ABCF) is a national nonprofit organization providing direct financial assistance for women and men nationwide to receive breast cancer screening, diagnostic and treatment services.
With early detection and treatment, the five-year survival rate for breast cancer is over 98 percent. In 2007, an estimated 178,480 women and 2,030 men in the U.S. were diagnosed with breast cancer; however, more than 40,000 women and 450 men reportedly died from the disease.
Through the Key to Life Breast Cancer Screening Assistance Program, direct assistance in the form of  financial grants for annual mammogram screenings and breast cancer diagnostic tests to find or rule out breast cancer are made to men and women in need. Each year, approximately 10,000 people receive services as a result of direct financial assistance from the American Breast Cancer Foundation. Programming includes outreach to the Spanish-speaking population throughout the United States as well.
For patients with breast cancer and survivors, ABCF provides many services including referrals for patients and their families to assistance programs and support services in their local communities. Financial assistance is provided for patients in need of chemotherapy and medications so that treatment can begin and/or continue. ABCF funds transportation for breast cancer patients to attend treatment appointments. ABCF provides post-surgical homecare kits, chemotherapy wigs, breast prosthesis, and support/therapy garments for the treatment of Lymphodema to breast cancer patients.

Women in need of assistance through the Key to Life Breast Cancer Screening Assistance Program should call 877-KEY-2-LIFE (877-539-2543) or visit www.abcf.org for more information. Assistance is available for Spanish-speaking women as well at the same number.
