“[Amy] is a member of the Germantown Chamber of Commerce and co-chaired the 2006 Taste of the Town that helps raise money for Make-A-Wish through their live auction.  She is a 2006 graduate of Leadership Germantown, an Executive Committee board member of Leadership Germantown, and member of the Education Commission for the City of Germantown.  She is also a member of the Republican Women of Purpose and Board Member of the Memphis Estate Planning Council.  She was recently elected to the Council Relations Committee for the National Association of Estate Planners and Councils. She is one of 25 people that represent 25,000 members across the country. Amy O’Bannon has it all and she is definitely making a difference in Memphis. “Since Florence “Flo” Patton Ryan began her professional career in 1977, she has dedicated herself to making our community a better place to live. Over the years Flo has conceived and implemented many significant programs to improve the health of babies. She implemented a home visiting follow up program for high-risk pediatric patients and TLC perinatal patients. Flo supervises the Campaign for Healthier Babies media and marketing initiative to encourage early and continuous prenatal care. To Flo, she is just doing her job, but the competent and compassionate manner in which she interacts with each person she meets makes her a very special woman.”

Rev. Dr. Gina Marcia Stewart

“ [Rev. Dr. Gina Marcia Stewart] captured the vision of the Christ Missionary Baptist Church founders forty-one years ago and was elected as the first African American female to serve an established African American Baptist congregation in Memphis and Shelby County in 1995.  Dr. Stewart has led the congregation of Christ Missionary Baptist Church for 13 years, which has grown from 500 members to more than 3,000. Under her leadership there have been many defining moments instrumental in resurrecting the pride and prowess of so many lost souls in the community such as the erection of a new worship center. She boldly tells everyone, “The grass may wither, flowers may fade, but God’s word will stand forever.”  That is what she teaches her congregation and it is what she lives her life by.”

KEYS TO SUCCESS: I believe that one of the keys to success is creativity.  To be creative one must love learning, understand the importance of taking risks, and be open to the inspiration and direction that comes from God, the quintessential Creator.
COMMUNITY SERVICE: I serve as a lector and Eucharist minister at the Church of the Holy Spirit.  I am also a member of the Order of Dominican Associates which is a Catholic organization of lay persons committed to the four pillars of the Dominican Tradition – prayer, study, community and service.
	Kathy’s almost 20-year history as a CLUE teacher for Memphis City Schools has greatly influenced her two children, Lauren and Bob. Lauren is a high school history teacher, and my son Bob is currently working on his Masters Degree in Teaching. 

Joy Vernon

“For the past 20 years Joy Vernon has worked for Juvenile Court of Memphis and Shelby County, now as the recently appointed Volunteer Coordinator for the Volunteer Services Bureau. In every position she has held, she treats people as she would like to be treated, and has proved herself indispensable as a motivated and efficient employee. She currently oversees 160 + volunteer auxiliary probation officers who supervise children placed on Court ordered probation. Eleven years ago, while caring for her mother, Joy was diagnosed with a kidney disease and had only 5% use of her kidneys. After 8 months on the donor waiting list, Joy successfully underwent a kidney transplant, … continu[ing] to demonstrate unconditional love for her mother during health and sickness, until the day of her mother’s death. [Additionally], she extended her parenting by assuming the role of foster parent to two teenage girls, who are her ex-husband’s [nieces].”

REWARDS: Writing the checks to YWCA of Memphis, The Exchange Club of Memphis, and Seek for the Old Path Home for the Homeless gives me a tremendous sense of satisfaction.  I cry every time I write these checks because I know I am doing something to stop the cycle of violence for women and children, both those I know and those I have yet to meet. I have also created a production that provides healing for our cast and audience. It reaffirms my strength and the strength we create when we come together to plan anything for our collective belief that women and children have the right to be happy, healthy, and unscarred by violence.

MOST RECENT PROJECT:  I help coordinate volunteers and talk to students for Project Aviator/Aerospace with OBAP (Organization of Black Airline Pilots) at Wooddale High School.  This program helps high school students get ready for college.  We help them with their resumes, ten year plans, and interview preparation.  It is so rewarding to see the students grasp an idea, succeed in getting to college and achieve their dreams.

“As a glaucoma specialist, Dr. Salim has a deep interest in public health.  She regularly works with community health screening projects to detect the potentially blinding disease of glaucoma in at-risk populations.  Last spring, she screened underserved patients in the Greenlaw area. As an assistant professor of ophthalmology at the UT Health Science Center, she also plays a role in educating future doctors, teaching surgical skills to residents and fellows in ophthalmology both here and abroad. On her most recent travels to Malaysia, Syria, Saudi Arabia, and Guatemala, she performed cataract and glaucoma surgeries and taught surgical skills to local doctors to help improve the quality of care in their communities.”

She also has worked in the educational publishing field and with Turner Broadcasting in the development of a documentary series.”

REWARDS: The partnership with Mid South Reads and The Commercial Appeal Newspaper in the Classroom programs serializations of books in the newspaper.  The whole Memphis community reads and discusses the selected book.  Teachers sign up their classrooms with anywhere from 5,000-9,000 students, along with the 150,000 newspaper subscribers, reading and discussing the selected book for 6 weeks.  I now have people calling me and bringing me books to serialize.   It is very rewarding seeing the Memphis community excited about reading and discussing a book!
